One of my favorite computer upgrades is to simply increase the amount of computer memory. Adding RAM can help improve performance, the number of programs you can have open, allow you to run more applications at one time, and just have a better experience.

I typically try for twice as much as what is standard in new systems. Right now most systems come with 2 GB of RAM. Shooting for 4GB will save you some upgrades you will probably need down the road.

It used to be a very expensive purchase, but the dropping costs in memory have made it a rather minor upgrade and it is very simple to do yourself.
