The term "market research" can seem very broad, but it can be as specific as you need it to be. Understanding your market is critical to the success of an organization.
I was just going over this the other day with someone about the sales models that will work in different areas of the world. In North America there is often a tendency to use a "rental" model for a product, but in other parts of the world, they want to own it themselves. There are pros and cons to both, but it depends on what the market wants.
You need to understand your market. It could be customers, readers, viewers, clients, listeners, consumers, or whatever you want to call them.
