Getting Frets On Fire Working On Vista

Written by Neil Galloway

I recently installed Frets On Fire on my computer and have been having a great time. I still need a guitar though, but I'll figure that out soon enough. Getting Frets On Fire to work took a little bit of effort though.

I had issues getting it to work on both Vista and XP, but managed to figure them both out. Check out my article on getting Frets On Fire Working on Windows XP.

Windows Vista Frets On Fire Error #1

I tried installing the latest version which is Frets On Fire 1.2.512. I installed it and loaded it up. I was able to scroll through the menus and make selections. As soon as I enter a song, I get the following error in a window titled cx_Freeze: Python error in main script:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "c:\users\proj\cx_Freeze-3.0.3\initscripts\console.py", line 27, in ?

Here is a screenshot of my error.

Windows Vista Frets On Fire Error #2

The next thing I tried was uninstalling Frets on Fire and then installing the version Frets On Fire 1.2.451. Unfortunately, after I uninstalled version 1.2.512 and then installed 1.2.451 I received the following error on startup in a window titled Errors occurred:

See the logfile 'C:\Program Files\Frets on Fire\FretsOnFire.exe.log' for details
Frets On Fire Vista Downgrade Error

This was slightly annoying. It was even worse off than before. I found out one crucial point though: Uninstalling Frets On Fire does not actually uninstall the whole thing. The folder is still left over and you have to go manually delete it. So I still had remnants of 1.2.512 around. After I uninstalled the all Frets On Fire copies, deleted the folders still sitting around, and the reinstalled 1.2.451, everything worked fine.

Summary Of Getting Frets On Fire Working On Windows Vista

Install Frets On Fire 1.2.451 only. Do not use the latest version and just find mods for the older version. It works great. If you mistakenly installed the latest version, uninstall it and delete the folder manually to make sure it is all gone before installing FoF 1.2.451. There are some excellent mods that will fix any of the issues in 1.2.451 for you so won't need to upgrade anyways. Try out RF-Mod.

Doesn't work??? I am just speaking from my own experience. The version 1.2.512 was crazy slow on both my XP and Vista computers, but 1.2.451 worked fine. My XP box was Pentium 4 2.4GHz (over 5 years old) with 1GB of RAM. The Vista machine is a newer laptop with a fair bit of power that still choked on 1.2.512.

I mean whats the thing remnant of version 1.2.512 that I hae to delete to get 1.2.451 works

Delete the actual frets on file folder before installing the older version.

i.e. C:\Program Files\Frets On Fire

Remove any folder in Program Files that is the Frets on Fire one...mine default to that name I believe. Even after you uninstall, it will still be there.

Im also on a vista laptop and getting highly stressed- thinking of un installing vista and putting xp on JUST to play FoF :P

Amy

That's odd. It was the same procedure for xp or vista to get it working for myself. Is it a performance issue...lots of stuttering? It might be flat out performance of your laptop too.

Amy Matthews Says:
2008-04-20 03:55:53
Its more than stuttering, more like a full out speech inpairment :P

Ive now got it to load but its now so slow and so laggy that i cant get past the loading page :(

My graphics card isnt too bad.. its not great but ive played more in depth games on it- NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150

Not sure what else i can do to make it work :(

Neil Galloway Says:

The problem is that it is a homebrew game...not made professionally.
It isn't exactly optimized for great performance. Still, if your
computer is relatively new, it should be working. All I know is what
I have done to get it working on my computer (5 years old) and it
works fine.

My god 1.2.451 works on Vista - thank you so much.

As stated before play on a lower resolution for speed, and if need be lower the anti-alias to zero or 2x, plus lower the SVG quality setting. These seem to help

Hi Neil,
Can I have your permission to translate this article (and some hints, included in comments) to polish - and place it on http://frets.pl site? Surely - this knowledge will help a lot the FoF fans from Poland.

Thank you so much! I was looking around all over the web for the solution. I was getting memory management, irql, and cache memory errors, and was going to give up. But now I'm Rocking out!

Great!
A very early version of FoF (1.0.1 something) used to work fine here, but then I felt like updating to 1.2.512 on this windows XP and SHlT happened. The game would freeze at the song initialization (after 'tuning up'). I also noticed it consumed all my RAM during the freeze time.

Now I got the zip version of 1.2.451 installed and it works fine! Thumbs up

Thanks, great tip! I had version 1.2.512 working fine on Windows XP then upgraded video cards (to an ATI HD3650) and it stopped working. Version 1.2.451 works on the new video card though, go figure.

You didn't leave any return contact information. Anyhow, please do translate this article if you want. Just leave a reference to this article somewhere in there.

I can't get it to work on Vista AT ALL. This is driving me insane. I have tried every combination of loading and version and the crappy Vista just gives me the "Program Failed" box and nothing else to go on. I REALLY REALLY HATE VISTA.
