Video Conferencing and Cost Effectiveness
Video conferencing used to be an expensive, futuristic technology. More of a show-off feature for a meeting. This has changed a lot in the past 10 years however.
It has become a very affordable, convenient solution to having meetings. When I attended university there were courses offered by the two largest universities in my region using video conferencing. The cost of the professor's time was more valuable than the cost to video conference one professor from the one university to the other university. It was a great opportunity to cut costs and still offer the one on one feel for the classroom.
In 2002, the dot com bubble had burst and a lot of companies were tightening things up even more, preparing for the worst (that had fortunately already happened for most). I was working at a telecommunications company and they were no longer paying for attendance to user group meetings for important software applications. Video conferencing was taking place to allow the engineers and management to take part affordably.
With the cost of travel increasing, the toll it takes on an employee's family, and the business cost of lost time when an employee is in transit, the benefits of video conferencing becomes quite attractive.
This is a PayU2Blog posting for MegaMeeting.com. They offer a variety of video conferencing services.
I didn't realize how much the video conferencing technology had changed as well. They offer video conferencing through an entirely browser based web application. No applications need to be installed and being browser based, it makes it available to almost any user with a broadband connection. Check them out if you are interested.
